The 18th International Congress of Classical Archaeology

On the proposal of the International Association for Classical Archaeology (AIAC), the National Museum of Roman Art in Mérida has been chosen as the venue for its next international congress. Since the 1950s these meetings have been organised in different countries every five years by institutions of recognised prestige in the field of classical archaeology. They have become excellent vehicles for scientific projection and dissemination among the international community and are attended by the most eminent specialists, professional archaeologists and students from all over the world. They serve to define new points for scientific debate and to encourage contact between professionals on an international level.

The 18th International Congress of Classical Archaeology will be held in Mérida in May 2013. On this occasion the slogan will be “Centre and periphery in the ancient world” it will be jointly organised by the National Museum of Roman Art, the Government of Extremadura Department of Education and Culture and the Catalan Institute of Classical Archaeology, institutions of recognised prestige and projection and with a recognised track record in their specialities.

In addition to the scientific sessions, the congress will include complementary activities such as tours of the site of Augusta Emerita and the National Museum of Roman Art, as well as excursions programmed for the days following the congress. These will visit different sites and places of archaeological interest that played an important role in the Romanisation of the Iberian Peninsula in the Mérida area.
